Best Pull Up Bar
There are a lot of different pieces of home gym equipment that you might be thinking about investing in. But one of the best purchases you can make to improve your overall fitness and boost your health right through the roof would have to be one of the best pull up bar setups you can find.
The only trouble is that there are a bunch of different kinds of pull up bars that you can pick and choose from – each and every one of them a little bit different from the other, bringing different features to the table, and coming in at a unique price point.
We’ve put together this quick guide to hopefully help you find the right lumbar system and set it up for your specific needs and your budget. We’ll walk you through what we feel are some of the best pull up bar options available, but will also show you what you should be looking for in these tools so that you know how to find the right one for you!
A couple of things that you’ll want to think about before buying a new pull up bar include…
How Will it be Mounted
There are really only three different kinds of pull up bars out there that are separated by the way that they can be mounted:
Doorjamb mounted pull up bars simply extend inside of a doorjamb until they apply unknown pressure to support you and your fold weight while doing push-ups, but aren’t exactly the safest of the bunch.
Fixed Pull up Bars
Fixed pull up bars are attached directly to studs in your wall or some other stable platform, and are lot safer than doorjamb pull up bars, but aren’t quite as good as a standalone pull up bar station.
Standalone pull-up bar stations is going to eat up a lot of room though, something that you’ll need to plan for.
Check your Clearance
Even if you’re able to squeeze a stand alone pull up bar station into your room without any trouble, you’ll want to make sure that you can comfortably lift yourself up and above the pull-up bar without hitting the ceiling, or isn’t going to be all that useful.
At the last thing that you want to have happened is come crashing down to the ground halfway through a pull-up session, only because you selected a pull-up bar that wasn’t quite as securely fixed-do whatever or wherever you had hoped it was. That’s a good way to get yourself injured in a hurry.
Best Pull Up Bar Reviews in 2015
1. Iron Gym Upper Body Workout

- Manufactured out of high quality construction materials that are both lightweight and super durable
- Opens up the possibility to do pull-ups, push-ups, chin-ups, dips, crunches, and a handful of other exercises with just one piece of workout equipment and
- Offers three different grip positions (the neutral grip, the narrow grip, and the wide grip) to hit your muscles from a bunch of different angles
- Takes advantage of leverage to “stick” in any doorway without ever having to use screws or bolts to prop it up
- Just about as inexpensive a pull-up bar as it gets
What’s to like about Iron Gym Upper Body Workout
Of all the different things that this Iron Gym option brings to the table, the fact that it is so versatile cannot be over appreciated. It’s nice to be able to go from doing pull-ups in the doorway to elevated push-ups or dips without any real letdown whatsoever.
Perfect for those that want to blast their muscles and get in a real full upper body workout with a single piece of equipment.
What’s not to like
Because it doesn’t securely attach to anything (instead of using leverage and friction to stay in place), this isn’t exactly the safest pull-up station that you were going to come across.
As far as entry-level pull up bars and pull up stations are concerned, the Iron Gym Upper Body Workout isn’t the worst thing that you could spend your money on.
Is the best pull up bar available on the market today?
Probably not – but at this price point, it’s definitely well worth purchasing. We give it 4 out of 5 stars.
2. Stamina Doorway Trainer Plus
Similar in nature to the Iron Jim pull up bar station that we just review, this is a little bit more involved and even a little bit more flexible – not to mention made out of even more heavy-duty construction materials.
The Stamina Doorway Trainer Plus offers the ability to get in a full upper body workout as well as a solid core workout with a single piece of exercise equipment, something that much more expensive options cannot offer. It’s definitely worth looking into.
- Five unique grip positions allow people to hit muscle groups in almost every way imaginable
- Professional-grade stainless-steel construction material (polished black or chrome) offers incredible durability and up to 250 pounds weight capacity
- Thick padding and non-slip comfort grips make it easy to get in a grueling workout without worrying about sweat
- Effortlessly installs into any standard doorway without any hardware at all
- Reasonably priced for everything that it brings to the table
What’s to like about Stamina Doorway Trainer Plus
The overall “overbuilt” construction quality of this particular pull up station make it very, very difficult to ignore. It’s about as well made a piece of exercise equipment as you’re going to find anywhere in the health and fitness world, and honestly, you have to be at least a little bit crazy not to take this set up seriously if you are looking for an “in the doorway” pull up bar.
What’s not to like
On the flip side, of course, it isn’t a standalone or fixed pull-up station, which means you’re always going to run the risk of it coming tumbling down upon you halfway through an upper-body set. It’s a real concern (though marginalized thanks to the unique design of this setup) though it shouldn’t really be a deal-breaker.
Even better than the Iron Gym doorway option we recommended above, the Stamina Doorway Trainer Plus has certainly earned its 4.7 out of 5 stars rating.
3. Stud Bar Pull Up Bar
Fixed pull up bars are the kinds of pull up bars that you probably used when you were in middle school, high school, or college, and are considered by most to be the ultimate upper bodywork up station.
Simple, straightforward, and very versatile, the Stud Bar pull-up bar setup is going to provide you with the ability to get in some top-notch upper body workouts based on the fact that it installs directly into wall studs in your home or garage.
- The relatively small bar is perfect for those that have 8-foot standard size ceilings
- Standard bar placement is perfect for those that have 9-foot ceilings or those that are willing to mount directly to open studs
- Manufactured out of 14gauge steel with triangular gussets to provide incredible strength and durability as well as improved stability and strength
- When installed properly can effortlessly support up to 600 pounds of weight without any trouble at all
What’s to like about Stud Bar Pull Up Bar
Though it might not look like all that much on the surface (but what pull up bar really looks “advanced”?), the Stud Bar is as good as it gets when you’re talking about fixed mounted pull up bar options.
Far and away one of the best pull up bar solutions that you’re going to come across anywhere, this particular set up can install quickly into any standard wall without any specialized hardware that isn’t already included. Installation should happen in no time at all, and once you’re good to go, you’re going to be good to go for quite a while!
What’s not to like
Not only is this pull up bar going to require installation, but it’s also going to require that you have at least an 8 foot high ceiling (and ideally one that’s between 9 feet and 10 feet high). It’s also incredibly heavy and a little bit more expensive than the doorway options that we just reviewed.
But if you’re looking for the traditional pull-up experience, it doesn’t get any better than this!
It’s a no-brainer that this is one of the best pull up bar solutions we’ve come across, and if you’re willing to install a pull-up bar permanently into your home or garage, there is no reason not to get your hands on this one. We are going to give it a full 5 out of 5 stars and feel quite confident doing so!
4. Ultimate Body Press Wall Mounted Pull Up Bar
Another fixed wall mounted pull up bar solution, this one is a little bit more flexible than the Stud Bar we reviewed above – and that certainly isn’t a bad thing.
Filled with a bunch of extra features that are definitely going to help you get in the best upper body workouts of your life, the Ultimate Body Press wall mounted pull up bar system brings a lot of excitement to the table, that’s for sure.
- Multiple workout stations are possible with flexible bar and handle set up
- Padded foam grips make sure that your hands are able to stay on the bar even during the most grueling and sweat-filled workouts
- Heavy-duty steel construction guarantees that you won’t hit the deck in the middle of a workout
- Easy installation allows you to find the studs in your home and set the bar up securely
- Powder-coated finish guarantees that this pull up bar is going to look just like brand-new for years and years to come
What’s to like about Ultimate Body Press Wall Mounted Pull Up Bar
The fact that you are going to be able to use this pull up bar in a variety of different ways is probably its biggest selling point. You’re going to be able to do standard pull-ups and chin-ups, dips, and a number of other upper body workouts just by installing this pull up kit into your walls at home.
What’s not to like
Not quite as “solid” feeling as the Stud Bar, you’re going to need to make sure that you install this pull-up bar system into your walls securely with additional hardware or you could end up with a bit of a mess on your hands.
Certainly one of the best pull up bar options money can buy right now, this isn’t quite as nice as some of the other solutions we’ve reviewed – but it’s also about a third of the price. We’ll give it 4.3 out of 5.
5. Perfect Fitness Multi-Gym
An entry-level doorway/fixed hybrid kind of setup, the Perfect Fitness Multi-gym is an interesting entry into the world of pull up bars and one that you’ll want to pay at least a little bit of extra attention to.
While not nearly as compact as some of the other doorway options we’ve already outlined in this quick guide, it does have extra stability and safety features that make it an attractive alternative.
- Manufactured out of high-end construction materials (including structural tubular steel)
- Adjustable to fit every standard doorframe between 27 inches and 35 inches wide
- Takes advantage of “extendable” doorframe arms and white handles to improve stability
- Effortless to install without any drilling required
What’s to like about Perfect Fitness Multi-Gym
You’ll be able to get in a number of different upper body workouts when you choose to use this pull up system. It offers a standard pull up bar, close and wide grip pull-ups, a dip station, and the ability to be dropped onto the floor without any trouble to do situps, push-ups, and other exercises.
What’s not to like
There is no getting around it – this is pretty big for a doorway pull up system. The extra-wide arms give it increased stability for sure, but it isn’t going to be anywhere near as compact or as easy to set up as some of the smaller options out there.
Maybe not quite as nice as some of the other doorways pull up stations we’ve reviewed, the Perfect Fitness Multi-Gym is still a contender for the top spot as the best pull up bar set up if only because it is so inexpensive and so safety focused. It gets 4.6 out of 5.
6. ProSource Heavy-Duty Easy Gym
Another of the “complete upper body workout station” pull up bars that are so popular on the market today (and for obvious reasons), the ProSource Heavy-Duty Easy Gym Doorway pull up bar is definitely made out of sturdier stuff than most other inexpensive pull-up bar options designed to be installed quickly into any doorway and then removed when the workout has been completed.
Multiple stations that allow for anywhere between 12 and 24 different workouts and exercises to be practiced with just one single doorway pluck bar pull up bar make this one of the more versatile options, and something that you’re definitely going to want to consider seriously.
- High grade structural tubular steel construction makes this a very strong and very safe pull up bar
- Infinitely portable thanks to its relatively compact to mention’s, it fits in any standard doorway between 24 inches and 32 inches wide
- Multiple grip positions allow for multiple different workouts and training exercises to be performed without the need for extra equipment
- “Slip in” installation means it only takes a couple of seconds to get your workout equipment ready and only a few seconds more to pack things up to go
What’s to like about ProSource Heavy-Duty Easy Gym
The fact that this pull up bar can be effortlessly installed in any standard doorway in less than a few seconds and then effortlessly taken down to be stored somewhere else when the workouts have concluded is a big advantage it has over fixed and standalone pull-up bar stations.
What’s not to like
Some of the handles and grip stations on this pull up bar aren’t quite as easy to get to or as comfortable to use as the others, which somewhat limits its flexibility.
Because there are so many different doorways pull up bar options out there on the market, many of them that offer the same kind of features this one does at lower or similar price points, we can’t recommend it as the very best pull up bar money can buy – though it’s certainly going to rank up there amongst the top options. We’ll give it 4 out of 5 stars.
7. Sunny Health & Fitness Door Way Chin Up
Sunny Health & Fitness has always been one of the most reputable fitness equipment companies to offer top-notch solutions at it expensive price points, and their doorway chin-up station is no exception.
Though it isn’t quite as complete (or as reasonably safe) a pull-up bar station as some of the other options we’ve reviewed above, for those that need an “on the go” workout companion, it really doesn’t get a lot better than this.
- As minimalist a pull-up bar as you are going to come across
- Quick installation (with the use of a tension bar and “safety cup” equipment) lets you work out in no time at all
- Can be installed safely and securely into pretty much any doorway of any dimension up to 36 inches wide
- Isn’t going to threaten to break your bank account at any point in time
What’s to like about Sunny Health & Fitness Door Way Chin Up
There probably isn’t a more simple and straightforward pull up station than this one, and for those that are constantly on the go or just want in easy to install in seconds pull up station in any doorway they come across it just isn’t going to get a lot better than this set up.
What’s not to like
It’s impossible to say that this is as safe a pull up bar as any of the other options mentioned above, if only because it uses direct tension and friction (as well as the inclusion of “safety cups”) to keep it in the doorway while you’re working out.
Most of the time that is going to be a problem, but you never want to be worried that you’re going to go crashing to the ground the next time that you pull yourself up in the middle of a workout.
At this price point, and for what it is, there aren’t many other better options on the market today. We feel comfortable giving this a full 4 stars out of 5, though you’ll want to make sure that you understand its limitations.
Choosing from the Best Pull Up Bar Reviews
The fixed pull up stations that we mentioned above are always going to be the safest and the most stable/secure, but they are also going to eat up the most space and require an open wall for installation. The doorway options that we reviewed are a little bit more versatile and convenient, though the Sunny Health & Fitness doorway option isn’t quite as stable as the others.
At the end of the day, you are going to be the only one to know which of the options that we’ve reviewed above is the best pull up bar for your specific needs and application, and we hope we’ve been able to point you in the right direction!
All things considered, there are going to be a bunch of different pull up bar options that you will be able to pick and choose from. But, we can guarantee that you can’t wrong buying the Iron Gym Upper Body Workout, Stamina Doorway Trainer Plus or Stud Bar Pull Up Bar.
How Does a Pull-up Bar Work?
Pull-up bars are simple devices that can be attached to any door’s frame. They are used for training purposes and are mostly designed to satisfy the male public’s needs. There are different types of pull-up bars that one can install. Telescopic door frame pull-up bars, wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, free-standing, or DIY; these are all devices that can be used to train the body muscles, tone, and strengthen them.
It is often stated that pull-up bars are the most adaptable kits for muscle training. They are ideal for home use, as well as gym use, they can be easily installed and target a wide variety of muscle groups.
If you were thinking of a method that will strengthen your upper body in a short time, then the pull-up bar might just be the perfect option for you. Although pull-up exercises can seem difficult to perform at first, they are really as difficult as any other types of exercise. The difference between pull-ups and weight lifting, for example, is the fact that you use your own body mass to build proportional muscles.
What are the benefits of pull-up bars?
People who choose to exercise using a pull-up bar get to build beautiful lats, a muscle group that is also known as latissimus dorsi. The rhomboids, the muscles that support the lats, as well as the arm muscles, can be also easily built up with the help of a pull-up workout.
Although most people use this device daily, it is not necessarily essential to have an everyday routine, but bear in mind the fact that you should be persistent in this activity. Therefore, even if you only train three times a week, the effort of your work will be visible in a few weeks.
Pull-up exercises are great for those who are looking to do cardio workouts and build their upper body muscles at the same time. Pull-ups increase one’s heartbeat rate, especially when the motion is repeated for a few minutes. It seems difficult to engage in pull-ups for a few minutes continuously, but once you have built up your strength, it will be just a normal workout routine.
The pull-up bar is a great device that helps you build your resistance and keep training even when you rest. For example, try to hang freely when you feel tired after a few pull-up series and observe the sensation. It helps your muscles stretch and become more powerful.
How does a pull-up bar actually work?
Well, the answer is quite simple. A pull-up bar needs to be properly installed in order to work. When first attaching it to a door frame, a wall or ceiling, it is important to observe its position and make sure that it is straight. Most of the times, if it is parallel to the floor or ceiling, it means that it is straight, but just to be sure, you can use a level tool. Also, make sure that you can reach it and that it will allow you to comfortably perform your pull-ups, without being too close to the floor.
You can start training right away. For maximum results, build a daily routine and stick up to it. Begin with as many pull-ups as you can and increase their number weekly or monthly.
